Sub-county, Masaka District
The Minister of Local Government, Hon. Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, today led a high-level delegation to Kyanamukaka Sub-county in Masaka District to engage stakeholders on H.E. the President’s Directive to Expose and Eliminate Corruption in Uganda.
The delegation includes the Minister of State for Local Government, Hon. Justine Nameere, Hon. Babirye Kityo Sarah, officials from the Ministry of Local Government, representatives from various security agencies, and district leaders from Masaka. The meeting has brought together local leaders, technical officers, and community representatives to discuss governance challenges, service delivery, and measures to strengthen transparency and accountability in local governments.
Addressing the stakeholders, Hon. Barugahara reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to eliminating corruption, noting that the district engagements are intended to provide citizens with a platform to openly report corrupt practices that hinder development and service delivery.
“We are here to fight corruption and give every citizen an opportunity to speak out and expose those who misuse public resources. Government wants to hear directly from the people so that action can be taken against those frustrating service delivery,” the Minister said.
During the discussions, stakeholders highlighted several development priorities, including the need for additional town councils and the establishment of more seed secondary schools to improve access to education.
The Minister also responded to concerns regarding the construction of administrative headquarters. He advised the local leadership to make prudent use of the resources currently available by first constructing modest office facilities instead of waiting for funding to build a large headquarters complex.
He encouraged the district to mobilise additional resources over time to complete the main administrative block, while ensuring that available funds are utilised efficiently to address immediate needs.
Hon. Barugahara further stressed that local governments should prioritise investments that have a direct impact on citizens’ livelihoods. He urged leaders to channel more resources towards renovating schools, improving health centres, and strengthening essential public services before embarking on expensive administrative infrastructure projects.
The Minister emphasised that Government’s objective is to ensure that every shilling allocated to local governments translates into better services for wananchi, adding that accountability and prudent financial management remain critical to achieving sustainable development.
